Twelve months ago Barker entered into a new approach to Indigenous education with the establishment of the Darkinjung Barker Campus for Kindergarten to Year 6 Indigenous students at Yarramalong on the Central Coast. Twenty eight students are enrolled at the School which has seen students grow in confidence and develop their foundational skills in literacy and numeracy over the last year. There is a shared vision of creating a two-way partnership where we can learn from one another in an educational model that is unique to Australia.
The campus is funded through philanthropic means and was initially supported financially through the generous support of an old boy. To continue to support Indigenous Education, a fundraising dinner was held in May and generously hosted by Westpac. This wonderful and successful evening attracted 100 guests who heard from guest speakers including Master of Ceremonies, Ray Minniecon; Chair of Barker College, Peter Berkley; Head of Barker College, Phillip Heath; and Sean Gordon, the Chief Executive Officer of the Darkingjung Local Aboriginal Land Council.
